UDI 2010-035V5 Information about the DNA-test in family immigration cases to the applicant

UDI requires a DNA analysis in your application for family immigration.

UDI has decided that it is necessary with a DNA analysis to verify your relationship to the reference person.

In some countries, it is difficult to obtain birth certificates and other documents that are accepted by the Norwegian authorities.

These countries are Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and all African countries south of the Sahara (except South Africa). In some cases UDI will also conduct a DNA analysis of applicants from other countries.

Family members outside Norway will be tested at the Embassy responsible for the application. Family members living in Norway will be tested at their local police district.

You do not have to pay anything for the test, but you must cover your travel and accommodation expenses.

The DNA test is carried out by comparing saliva samples taken from the mouth of each of the family members. The test will show whether you are related. If the test shows that you are not related, you will be able to give a statement. When the UDI processes the application, we will take this statement into consideration.

When you have given a DNA sample the Embassy and the police will send the samples to a laboratory who conducts the DNA analysis. When the laboratory has received all the samples, they will start the analysis and send a report to UDI.

If you have given the reference person the power of attorney, the reference person will receive the decision when the application has been processed. If you have not given the reference person the power of attorney, the Embassy will inform you about the decision.

What happens if you refuse to give a DNA sample?

UDI may require you and your family member to take a DNA test to verify that you are related. You can still choose not to take the test, but if you do not have a particular reason for not taking the DNA test, UDI will probably reject your application.
